Meganissi is a picturesque
island in the Ionian Sea, 4 miles south - east of Lefkada. It is the biggest
of a group of islands (Scorpios, Scorpidi, Thelia, Kythros and others),
which fall within the administrative authority of Meganissi Municipality.
Meganissi covers an overall area of 19,85 square kilometres and is part
of the Prefecture of Lefkada. It constitutes the Municipality of Meganissi
and boasts three picturesque little villages, Vathi, Katomeri and Spartochori,
all of unique beauty. These three villages are the main settlements of
Meganissi and make up a total population of
2.000 people. The visitor will find these villages an ideal holiday destination
of traditional architecture, with hospitable people keeping a relaxed
pace of life, with a great diversity of scenery, pretty little
ports with fish taverns, restaurants and cafés, but most of all
with a breath - taking view onto the green surroundings and the crystal-blue
sea. Ai - Yannis, Spilia, Ambelakia, Atherinos and Limonari are the island's
most renowned beaches, while the caves of Papanikolis and Yovanis are
indeed worth a visit. You can easily visit Meganissi, as there is frequent
transport connection to and from Nydri, 16 km south of the town of Lefkada,
along the island' s Eastern coast. Meganissi is 4 miles off Nydri and
1½ mile off Scorpios, if the visitor chooses to travel onboard
the island's ferry-boats, with frequent connections Nydri Meganissi (Spelia
Vathi) starting at 7.00am. There are also daily ferry - boat trips to
Ithaca and Kephallonia; getting there will only take 25 minutes and it
is an awesome experience, as the visitor will have the chance to see many
of the little islets peppering the sea area around Meganissi and, in -
between, Madouri with the old
manor - house of Valaoritis, as well as Scorpios, the great estate owned
by the Onassis family.
